Does Page Load Time Affect Your Ranking?

Is page load time a good ranking factor for your website or online business?

Here is it coming from the horses mouth “We take page load time into account when ranking webpages in our search results. More specifically, pages that are really slow to load” said Google’s John Mueller.

To dig a little deeper into this question, we’ll use data that has been collected by search research experts.

A company called Searchmetrics recently completed a rankings report that found on average:

  • The top 10 ranking desktop pages loaded in 1.16 seconds.
  • The top 30 ranking desktop pages loaded in 1.20 seconds.
  • Top ranking pages on mobile pages loaded in 1.17 seconds.

The report concluded that the pages with higher rankings have quicker loading times in general.

The guys at Moz also published some information on the same topic. The data published goes back a few years and it concludes that page load time isn’t a google ranking factor in itself, but it is something called “time to first byte” or TTFB for short. This is the time it takes your browser to receive the first byte of information from a web server.

Out of all the data that was captured by MOZ, the TTFB metric had the strongest link to a change in google rankings. They concluded that the back-end of a website really does make a difference to your search engine ranking and that website owners should do all they can to improve their TTFB.

So what on earth is this TTFB stuff?

It’s all to do with your web servers, database servers and back-end applications.

Want to have a look at your back-end?

You bet you do.

Here’s what it looked like for RentHouse:

Two F’s mean we’ve definitely got issues!

Google PageSpeed insights gives you separate scores for mobile and desktop. You’ll find the one out of two will be in the red in a lot of cases. Certain things that aren’t big load problems on desktop make a bigger difference on mobile, hence the discrepancies in speed scoring.

Having a slow website is bound to have an effect on your bounce rate, not to mention your overall conversions and sales. If your site takes 5 seconds to load, you visitors are going to slap that back button asap rocky.

Losing website traffic does have an effect on your rankings.

These are some pretty alarming stats shown by WP Engine.

Page load problems also have a big impact in the publishing world. The Financial Times published a study that pointed out that when load time is increased, page-per-session consumption declines fairly rapidly.

The data shows that there are very clear benefits to making a website faster and the evidence is pretty conclusive.

You should be pretty convinced now that website load times really do matter. They can affect your SERP rankings which ultimately affects your bottom line. So make sure you optimise those websites!…

How To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing Using SEO

Affiliate marketing and SEO are two things that go hand-in-hand when it comes to owning a profitable online business. Affiliate marketing has to be one of easiest ways to get started with your own business on the internet.

(Baffled by affiliate marketing? Bengu Marketing provides the low down if you’re completely new.)

If you asked someone if they wanted to build a stream of residual income that will generate money for years to come after the initial work has been completed they would probably bite your hand off. In reality though, most people just aren’t willing to put the work in. People want a magic push-button solution but this simply doesn’t exist.

Affiliate marketing has built up a little bit of a bad reputation as a business sector that is filled with spam and crappy content. A few years ago, this was definitely the case but things have changed now. Several companies realised the power of affiliate marketing and have created affiliate programs around their products and services.

This led to a new breed of affiliate marketer coming to the forefront. An affiliate that produces wonderful content and actually adds value to their audience.

Today I want to talk about how you can use the power of SEO to build a profitable online business with affiliate marketing.

Choosing Your Product

Looking at affiliate marketing from an SEO standpoint is all about finding products that have a good amount of targeted search traffic. It’s also about finding a product that pays good commissions (you want to stay away from those $20 ebooks).

Most affiliates choose products that they have an interest in. Products that they’re passionate about. Many blog owners use affiliate marketing to monetise their blogs. It can be a great way to monetise a website that you have in a specific niche.

The bottom line is that if you have a specific knowledge about something, you can monetise that. Even if you aren’t an expert in any particular subject, you can start from scratch and self-teach yourself things very quickly.

Finding Buyer Keywords

After you’ve decided on your niche (if you’re starting from scratch) you’ll need to research the keywords that people use to find the products you’re promoting.

The first step to doing this is to select a product you want to promote:

You can start this process off by researching the best performing affiliate products in your niche. ClickBank is a great place to get started as they have products in almost every niche imaginable.

Clickbank allows you to sort by category and is very easy to navigate. Once you’ve selected a category, you’re going to want to sort products out by gravity. The gravity metric in ClickBank is a way they measure the success of a product. The higher the number, the more products are being sold by affiliates promoting it.

A good benchmark for gravity is 50. Once you find one that looks appealing to you, check the landing pages, read some reviews and make a note of the products you want to promote. You’ll be using this information to find relevant keywords for you to target.

Now we need to get on with some keywords research. Google keywords planner used to be a great tool to find keywords but they’ve recently made some changes that mean you have to be running ads to see the all the search data information.

Mangools is a great alternative to the Google keyword planner, that is also relatively inexpensive.

The great thing about Mangools is that not only does it provide tons of relevant keywords but it also shows you the SEO difficulty, allowing you to effectively gauge the competition for each keyword.

To find relevant keywords you can start off by entering general keyword terms relating to the blog you’ll create and the products you’ll be promoting. Mangools will come up with a bunch of related terms that you can then plug into the search again to find other relevant terms.

This is a great way for you to really dig deep and find those keywords that don’t have insane competition.

Another way for you to find keywords is to search for generic terms in Google and use the “searches related” at the bottom of the page to find terms that you might not have thought about.…

You can then do search engine optimization on the pages of your website which aren’t indexed.

One good way to get people to see your website first on a search engine is to use keywords. The key words should be affiliated with your website or product that you are selling. If you use too many keywords, you will be labeled as a spammer which will hurt your traffic.

Focus on one product or subject per page. You should only promote one product per page. You will make the customer confused and they won’t return to your site. Make sure that you hone in on one product.

Linking to authoritative external websites is very popular for website owners and bloggers and can help the search engines to recognise your site as an authority in your niche.

Learn how to promote using social media. Simply posting links to your company website is not advertising – it is spam. Providing content as a reason to visit your website is much more effective, and it also allows consumers to feel as though you are interested in their personal wants and needs.

Search engines will generally use a maximum of 160 characters for this description meta tag. Using the description meta tag, will go a long way toward boosting your SEO value.

Remember that keywords or phrases on each of your pages should total to around 3 to 5 percent of the total text of the pages. Keywords URL’s

By making the URL of a website with clear keywords, you will enhance the ease of their search-ability on search engines. The URL of a certain webpage will also make it easier for individuals who are visiting your site to navigate around. Ultimately, by having obscure and complex URL’s, it will make it harder for those pages to show up in the top ranking of any search engine.

In order to see if your SEO efforts are working, check where you stand in search engine rankings. There are many applications that do this for you such as Google Webmaster Tools and Majestic. If you don’t, you might be wasting your time assuming that your SEO is working while it isn’t.
